Work LocationKingston Expected duration1 Year Duties and ResponsibilitiesOrganizational context This Individual Contractor opportunity is situated in the Office of Environmental Management and Mineral Resources (OEMMR) at the Headquarters of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) located in Kingston, Jamaica, The International Seabed Authority (ISA) is an international organization established under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and the Agreement relating to the Implementation of Part XI of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (1994 Agreement). ISA is the organization through which States Parties to UNCLOS organize and control activities in the Area, particularly with a view to administering the resources in accordance with the regime for the seabed and ocean floor and subsoil thereof beyond the limits of national jurisdiction (the Area) established in the 1994 Agreement. Pursuant to Article 145 of UNCLOS, a part of ISAโs responsibilities is to take the necessary measures with respect to activities in the Area to ensure the effective protection of the marine environment from harmful effects which may arise from activities in the Area. This includes the development and review of policy instruments and procedures, including regional environmental management plans (REMPs) and environmental standards and guidelines. In this context, the ISA facilitates and coordinates initiatives, projects and expert-driven processes with respect to environmental science. One of the current priorities of the environmental unit of the Secretariat is to support the development of environmental threshold values, as part of the standards and guidelines being developed along with the regulations for exploitation of mineral resources in the Area. In addition, the ISA Secretariat has engaged several strategic, technical, and financial partnerships to facilitate the development and implementation of the ISAโs Action Plan in support of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (ISBA/26/A/17), adopted by the Assembly in December 2020. Among these, the Sustainable Seabed Knowledge Initiative (SSKI) aims to enable ISA to strengthen cooperation with all interested stakeholders to advance the knowledge of deep-sea biodiversity in the Area. The initiative focuses on accelerating deep-sea species descriptions, enhancing data flow and developing the capacity to create the enabling conditions for effectively fulfilling ISAโs environmental mandate and in accordance with agreed international goals and objectives. Under the direct supervision of the Environmental Coordinator, and overall supervision of the Director, OEMMR and in close consultation and cooperation with the relevant offices in the Secretariat the Individual Contractor will perform the following tasks: โข Assist with the preparation of activities documentation, reports, presentations and other dissemination materials. โข Coordinate and schedule meetings, appointments, and activities timelines. โข Facilitate internal and external communication between OEMMR, finance and communication units, project partners, experts and stakeholders โข Maintain and update activities files, databases, and records. โข Monitor activities progress and ensure that deadlines are met. โข Assist in the allocation and management of resources. โข Identify and address issues that may arise during the implementation of activities. โข Provide general support to other OEMMR programmes and initiatives related to the ISA MSR action plan, as needed. Qualifications/special skillsโข A university degree (Bachelorโs degree or equivalent) in business administration, project management, or a related field is required. โข At least 3 years of professional experience in projects and initiatives related to environmental science, and/or biodiversity field. โข Proven experience in project management. โข Experience working with environmental projects and initiatives. LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the Authority. For the position advertised, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable.
