Position purpose

The Officer, Environmental and Social Sustainability (DES), contributes to the implementation of the Bank's environmental and social sustainability mandate by promoting environmental and social soundness and sustainability principles in its financing operations.

Key functions and Responsibilities

Under the guidance and supervision of the Director DES, the Officer is responsible for the following duties:

Adhering to the Environmental and Social Policy and the Operational Manual, conducts environmental and social due diligence for operations, with an emphasis on climate change considerations. Drafting and integrating basic operation-specific plans, such as Stakeholder Engagement Plans, Environmental and Social Action Plans, Environmental and Social Management Plans, Resettlement Plans, and Climate Action Plans into the operational structure. Implementing the goals of the Climate Change Strategy to align operations with environmental and climate objectives. Contributing to drafting of strategic environmental and social objectives, policies, and procedures to ensure the Bank remains current with advancements in due diligence practices, emerging industry standards, regional and global initiatives, and international environmental, climate, and social requirements. Undertaking research and studies on environmental, climate, and social issues to support the Bank in staying informed about developments in these areas. Collaborating with external partners and stakeholders on sustainability topics of shared interest. Contributing to the identification of new business opportunities, exchanging expertise, harmonizing practices, advocating for sustainability principles, and enhancing the Bankโ€™s reputation as a credible, transparent, and accountable development institution. Perform other related duties as assigned to support the overall objectives of the Department.

Required knowledge, Skills and Experience

First-level University degree or equivalent in Life, Earth, Social or Environmental Sciences; or Sustainable Finance or Energy Policy; or a first-level University degree in any other area followed by a masterโ€™s degree or equivalent in the above areas. Knowledge of key international environmental, labor, health, safety and public information requirements, norms and standards applicable to public and private sector financing; Expertise in environmental, social, and climate risk and impact assessment practices and tools; Understanding of the primary environmental and social implications associated with manufacturing, telecommunications, infrastructure, transportation, energy and extractive industries, including the relevant prevention and mitigation measures; Familiarity with environmental and social guidelines and Best Available Techniques employed across various industries. At least 5 years of proven relevant working experience in working with environmental and social issues across various projects and processes.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Knowledge of greenhouse gas accounting methodologies, climate mitigation and adaptation strategies applied in extractive, energy, agribusiness, manufacturing and transportation sectors. Demonstrated proficiency in the working language of a Member State. Working experience in the BSTDBโ€™s region of operations. Previous experience in working with environmental and social issues in an international financial institution.
