Result of ServiceA functional knowledge management system that systematically captures, documents, and shares lessons learned, key success, and impact stories from GM-supported interventions and partnerships. Enhanced institutional memory and learning capacity with tangible knowledge products that demonstrate GM's development impact, strengthen partnerships, and inform evidence-based decision-making across the land degradation, drought resilience, and sustainable land and water management community. Work LocationBonn Office. Expected duration12 months Duties and ResponsibilitiesBackground: Desertification, climate change, and biodiversity loss are among the most pressing global challenges to sustainable development, as recognized during the 1992 Rio Earth Summit. The United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), established in 1994, is the only legally binding international agreement that connects the environment and development to sustainable land management. The Convention aims to support countries in addressing desertification, land degradation, and drought (DLDD). (www.unccd.int). The Global Mechanism (GM) of the UNCCD is tasked with supporting countries to mobilize financial and technical resources to combat DLDD. In line with this mandate, the GM works to support countries in developing project pipelines, investment frameworks and enabling conditions for financing at scale, with an increasing focus on innovation, private sector engagement and market-based solutions. The GM sits at the intersection of critical global challengesโland degradation, climate change, and food systemsโgenerating valuable insights and lessons that could transform how development partners approach these interconnected crises. However, institutional knowledge often remains siloed and underutilized. With support from BMZ, the GM is establishing an enhanced knowledge management framework to transform how institutional knowledge is captured, synthesized, and shared to maximize development impact. The GM requires a Knowledge Management Consultant with expertise in documenting impact to establish systems for capturing lessons learned, developing compelling content, and creating sustainable knowledge management practices that bring the GM's work to life. Duties and Responsibilities: Under the overall guidance of the Managing Director of the Global Mechanism and in collaboration with the entire Global Mechanism team and critical external partners, the consultant's duties will include but are not limited to: Knowledge Audit and Systems Design: โข Conduct an inventory of existing knowledge assets, case studies, and learning materials across GM-supported projects and programmes, as well as GM partnerships. โข Assess current knowledge flows, documentation practices, and information management systems to identify gaps and opportunities. โข Design a practical, user-friendly knowledge management system that enables systematic capture of lessons learned, key success, best practices, and impact stories from GM interventions and partnerships. โข Develop templates, guidelines, and processes for consistent knowledge documentation and dissemination across all GM activities. Case Study Development and Impact Documentation: โข Prioritize compelling case studies that demonstrate the impact and value of GM-supported interventions and successful partnerships. โข As needed, conduct interviews and field research (virtual or in-person) to gather primary data, testimonials, and qualitative insights from project stakeholders, beneficiaries, and partners. โข Document high-quality case studies that blend quantitative data with qualitative storytelling to illustrate development outcomes, lessons learned, and key successes. โข Create a series of impact stories that bring GM work to life through compelling narratives accessible to diverse audiences. Knowledge Product Development: โข Produce lessons learned publications synthesizing key insights from GM projects and programmes including project profiles, factsheets, and other similar materials. โข Develop technical reports, and knowledge briefs that distill complex information into actionable recommendations. โข Design and implement knowledge products that serve diverse stakeholder needsโfrom policymakers to practitioners to donor partners. โข Liaise with colleagues on the creation of data visualization tools, infographics, factsheets, and multimedia content to communicate and disseminate knowledge effectively. Collaborative Learning and Input Systems: โข Establish mechanisms for and Standard Operating Procedures for the systematic collection of knowledge inputs from GM-supported projects and programmes, as well as partnerships. โข Design and facilitate collaborative learning processes, including after-action reviews, reflection workshops, and peer learning sessions. โข Build capacity of GM staff and partners in knowledge documentation and sharing practices. โข Create feedback loops that ensure knowledge captured is actively used to inform decision-making and continuous improvement. โข Monitor utilization of knowledge products and gather feedback to continuously improve content quality and relevance.
