Organizational Setting
In July 2023, FAO started the implementation of the project โGlobal Network of Farmers Markets.โ The three-year project aims to explore and promote diverse farmers market models and collective mechanisms for small-scale producers to engage in sustainable food systems and become agents of economic, social and environmental sustainability. By this, the project aims to increase access of small- scale farmers to markets and develop mechanisms to value local products and link farmers with consumers.ย
The project focuses on three pillars including: 1) strengthening of the World Farmers Markets Coalition from an outreach and advocacy perspective as well as from a technical perspective; 2) generating evidence on different models of farmers markets and their contribution to sustainable agrifood systems through country-based mappings of farmers markets and systematize related evidence in a global farmers markets report. ; 3) developing the capacities of farmers markets associations through.
The project is implemented by the Rural Transformation and Gender Equality Division of FAO (ESP) base in Rome (Italy) in close consultation with FAO Tanzania. To assist and facilitate the mapping of farmers markets in Tanzania, FAO seeks to hire a Junior Specialist.ย
Reporting Lines
The Junior Specialist on Farmers Market Mapping Support reports to the FAO Representative and works under overall guidance of the Assistant FAO Representative (AFAOR-P) and the Project team in Tanzania Mainland. He/she is expected to work closely with the HQ Project Coordinator, the FAO Country Office Programme Associate and the Service Provider conducting the mapping.
Technical Focus
The incumbent will provide support to MVIWATA for farmers market data and establishment of a data analysis and reporting.ย
Tasks and responsibilities
โข ย ย Following the guidance of the ESP Project Coordinator, support the organization of preliminary key informantsโ interviews and stakeholders meeting to identify and validate the mapping sample.ย
โข ย ย Participate in the three-day remote training on the methodology applied for the study.ย
โข ย ย Facilitate field implementation of the mapping activities including the organization of key informant interviewed and focus group discussions.
โข ย ย Monitor the data collection processย
โข ย ย Support the organization of a stakeholder meeting at the end of the mapping to share findings and explore needs/opportunities for further support to Farmers Markets from a policy and programmatic perspective.
โข ย ย Perform any other duties as requested by supervisor.

Minimum Requirements ย ย
ย
โข ย ย Advanced university degree in Agriculture, Agriculture Economics, Agriculture Science and a related field
โข ย ย At least one year of relevant experience in data collection and analysis and formulation of Agriculture programmes, and agricultural marketing strategies
โข ย ย Working knowledge of English and Swahili
โข ย ย National of the United Republic of Tanzania or resident of the country with valid work permit
