The Organizational Setting
Environmentally Sustainable Airports and Operations: This internship position is located within the Environment (ENV) Section of the Air Transport Bureau (ATB) at the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). ENV is responsible for supporting ICAOโs Strategic Objective of Environmental Protection. This includes the development of policies, guidance, and initiatives aimed at reducing the environmental impacts of international civil aviation, with a specific focus on noise, air quality, climate change, and promoting environmentally sustainable airports and operations.
The primary focus of this internship is on developing outreach, increasing ICAO visibility, and improving coordination with UN entities, international and regional organizations in relation to sustainable airport infrastructure, operations, and environmental practices. This also includes support to global events, documentation, and inter-agency coordination related to sustainability in aviation.
The intern will report directly to the Deputy Director, Environment, and work under the guidance of the Chief, Climate Change, and relevant Environment Officers.ย
Terms of Reference
Under the supervision of Deputy Director, Environment, Chief, Environmental Standards Section and Environment Officers, the intern will:ย
- Assist in drafting, editing, and publishing CAEP Working Group 2 deliverables using appropriate tools to share information and best practices on environmental management projects at airports;
- Support research activities on environmentally sustainable airports and international aviation operations, including daily updates to the ICAO OPS tracker tool;
- Assist in reviewing and updating ICAO public webpages related to airports and operations to enhance content quality and user experience;
- Assist in data management and visualization to effectively present the latest innovations on airports and operations;
- Support the planning, coordination, and organization of ICAO seminars/events on aviation and the environment, including follow-up activities;
- Assist in the development and dissemination of outreach materials such as articles, reports, pamphlets, videos, and PowerPoint presentations related to aviation and environmental topics; and
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualificationsย
EducationAt the time of application, candidates are required to have completed or be enrolled in a graduate degree programme (second-level university degree or higher) in a field of study related to aviation, environment, aeronautical/aerospace or other engineering, or computer science.ย ย Applicants pursuing studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages should have completed at least four years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree.
LanguagesEssential requirements:ย Fluent reading, writing and speaking abilities in English.
Desirable requirements: A working knowledge of a second language of the Organization (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish).
Conditions of Internship
Interns are not paid. All costs related to travel, insurance, accommodation, and living expenses must be borne by the intern.
The duration of the internship is between three to six months. The intern is expected to work up to five days a week, with flexible arrangements possible to accommodate part-time schedules (e.g., up to 24 hours per week) for eligible students, in accordance with current off-campus work regulations.
Interns shall not be eligible to be engaged in any other form of employment within ICAO during the period of internship and shall not be eligible to apply for or be appointed to any post in the Secretariat or be contracted for any other remunerated employment with ICAO for the six months immediately following the end of their internship.
