The Organizational Setting
Action Plan on CO2 Emissions Reduction for international aviation: This position is situated in Environment (ENV) within the ICAO Air Transport Bureau (ATB). ICAO's activities in the environment field aim to limit or reduce the impact of international aviation on noise, local air quality, and the global climate. ENV is responsible for the development of a range of standards, policies and guidance material and provides capacity building and assistance for the implementation of mitigation measures to achieve these objectives. Measures include aircraft technology, operational improvements, the development and deployment of sustainable alternative fuels for aviation, and the use of market-based measures. In addition, ENV maintains close relations with other UN policy-making bodies that have expressed an interest in environmental aspects of civil aviation. The primary focus of this internship is on capacity building and support to States in the development of their action plans on CO2 emissions reduction.ย
Terms of Reference
Under the supervision of Deputy Director, Environment, Chief, Environmental Standards Section and Environment Officers, the intern will:ย
- Support the State Action Plan on CO2 emissions reduction from international aviation by proposing innovative approaches to assist States in developing their Action Plans;
- Assist in maintaining and updating existing tools, portals and reports to ensure information provided to ICAO Member States remains current and relevant;
- Assist in reviewing and updating ICAO public webpages related to action plans and capacity building to enhance content quality and user experience;
- Assist in ย Analyzing data and information from submitted Action Plans and updating the database accordingly;
- Support data collection and visualization using tools such as Power BI and SharePoint;
- Assist the ICAO State Action Plan team in preparing reports and briefings;
โข Assist in planning, coordinating and organizing ICAO Seminars/events related to aviation and environment and necessary follow-up activities;ย
โข Assist in planning, developing and disseminating outreach materials such as articles, reports, pamphlets, videos, and power point presentations related to aviation and environment; and
ย โข Perform other related duties.ย Education
At the time of application, candidates are required to have completed or be enrolled in a graduate degree programme (second-level university degree or higher) in a field of study related to aviation, environment, aeronautical/aerospace or other engineering, or computer science.ย ย Applicants pursuing studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages should have completed at least four years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree.
LanguagesEssential requirements: Fluent reading, writing and speaking abilities in English.
Desirable requirements: A working knowledge of a second language of the Organization (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish).
Conditions of Internship
Interns are not paid. All costs related to travel, insurance, accommodation, and living expenses must be borne by the intern.
The duration of the internship is between three to six months. The intern is expected to work up to five days a week, with flexible arrangements possible to accommodate part-time schedules (e.g., up to 24 hours per week) for eligible students, in accordance with current off-campus work regulations.
Interns shall not be eligible to be engaged in any other form of employment within ICAO during the period of internship and shall not be eligible to apply for or be appointed to any post in the Secretariat or be contracted for any other remunerated employment with ICAO for the six months immediately following the end of their internship.
