5 Steps to get a job in the United Nations

Background:

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

UN Women supports United Nations Member States in setting international standards for achieving gender equality and works with governments and civil society to formulate and enforce the laws, policies, programs and services needed to ensure that the standards are effectively implemented and that they truly benefit women and girls around the world.

UN Women through its Liaison Office to the African Union (AU) and United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) engages with the AU and its various organs, the UNECA and civil society organizations, as well as the diplomatic community. Through the office, UN Women provides technical support to Member States and the AU in the adoption, implementation and monitoring of commitments on gender equality and womenโ€™s empowerment (GEWE), in accordance with its mandate.ย

The African Girls Can Code Initiative (AGCCI) is a UN Women liaison Office flagship programme, commissioned and launched in 2018 by UN Women, the African Union Commission (AUC) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). The AUC through its department of Health, Humanitarian Affairs and Social Development (HHS), the Women, Gender, and Youth Directorate (WGYD) and Department of Education, Science, Technology & Innovation (ESTI) and other Implementing Partners namely UNECA, UNESCO and UNICEF who provide technical support to this initiative. Phase III of the initiative has focused on empowering adolescent girls and young women (ages 17โ€“25) with digital literacy, coding, and entrepreneurship skills across Africa and it has made substantial progress in promoting girlsโ€™ participation in STEM and digital innovation, contributing to Africaโ€™s broader digital transformation and gender equality goals.ย  This phaseย  has operated under four main key strategies namely: coding camps, national media campaigns involving role models (e.g., women in ICT, female teachers in schools), mainstreaming ICT, coding, and gender into the national curricula and providing more opportunities to AGCCI Alumni through the use of an on-line e-Learning platform and mentorship programme to enhance networking among the girls, trainers, and mentors and to help the girl coders to continuously update their skills and connect with a supportive online community to share ideas and opportunities.ย

In alignment with the Strategic Note of UN Women Liaison Office (2023-2025) through its Output 1.2.3 โ€œEnsuring that all Young girls from different background have equitable access to STEM education, decent job opportunities and increased skills in digital literacy and leadershipโ€ and since inception:
