Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe Office of Information and Communications Technology (OICT) serves as the Secretariatโs central entity for information and communications technology. Established by General Assembly mandates, OICT defines the strategic direction for ICT, ensures coherence in governance, standards, and policy, and delivers enterprise-wide systems that support both headquarters and field operations. Led by the Chief Information Technology Officer at the rank of Assistant Secretary-General, the Office works under the Department of Operational Support and the Department of Management Strategy, Policy and Compliance. Its role includes overseeing major UN platforms, strengthening cybersecurity, managing global ICT infrastructure, and enabling data-driven decision-making to support the Organizationโs mandates. Guided by the Secretariatโs ICT Strategy, OICT focuses on three core priorities: accelerating innovation by promoting frontier technologies such as artificial intelligence and blockchain; strengthening ICT resilience through robust cybersecurity and operational safeguards; and enabling digital transformation by aligning technology initiatives with the UNโs goals and mandates. Through these efforts, OICT ensures that the Secretariat delivers secure, resilient, and cost-effective digital services that support efficiency, interoperability, and innovation across all duty stations and missions worldwide. Under the supervision of the Open Source Team Lead, the Social Media Intern's duties will include the following: โข Use Trello Boards to plan, create, and curate social media content on a daily basis, maintain and update weekly editorial calendars, collect and collate multimedia information from different departments and organizations; โข Monitor various sources for new content and information about what is happening in and around the UN any given week; โข Edit and subtitle news videos for the Open Source Teams social media channels, using dedicated software (such as Adobe Premiere Pro); create visuals, quote cards and other materials as requested using online tools (such as Canva or Adobe Photoshop); โข Attend press conferences and events at UN and other venues to gather quotes, take photos and videos which can be used in social media posts; โข Take photographs and make short videos at various events at UN and other venues and beyond; โข Draft posts for X, Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn; โข Research trends and posts from partners and suggest reposts; monitor our social media accounts for followers' comments and questions; โข Conduct weekly analysis of best performing posts and suggest improvements; โข Draft visual monthly reports on performance of social media accounts, and fill in monthly statistics reporting in Excel; โข Attend biweekly press briefings, and prepare summaries of such briefings; โข Carry out other tasks as requested by the Open Source Team. Qualifications/special skillsTo qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a)Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or, (b)Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent). Studies/degree in the areas of Information and Communications Technology, Information Science, Data Analytics, Information Systems, Information Management, Project Management, Business Management, or related field is desirable. Skills: Knowledge of developing and scheduling social media content across major platforms (e.g., Instagram, Twitter/X, Facebook, LinkedIn), to increase follower engagement is required. Knowledge of conducting research on industry trends, audience preferences, and competitor activities to inform content strategies and identify new engagement opportunities is desirable. Knowledge of monitoring and responding to comments and messages in a timely manner, enhancing the brandโs reputation for responsive customer engagement is desirable. Knowledge of helping to organize and run a successful social media campaign, coordinating posts with social media leading accounts to boost campaign reach and analyzing post-campaign data for key takeaways is desirable. Candidates should also have demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the United Nations Charter; and the ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try to understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
