Desired start time: Summer 2025 Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe Internship is located in the Cartographic Unit, Geospatial Information Section, Technology Operations Service, Operations Support Division, within the Office of Information and Communications Technology (OICT). The internship is for three months with an opportunity for extension for an additional three months, depending on the needs of the Office. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns will work five days per week (35 hours). The Geospatial Information Section provides geospatial information and services in support of the decision making and operational needs of the Security Council, the Secretariat and United Nations Peace Operations, and manages the programme for United Nations (UN) field mission geospatial information operations. The Geospatial Information Section provides clearance of maps for the United Nations as per UN Guidelines for the publication of maps (ST/AI/189/Add.25/Rev.1); programme management of the United Nations GeoData and Second Administrative Level Boundaries (SALB); technical assistance on international boundary issues, and serves, together with the Statistics Division of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), the Secretariat functions to the United Nations Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management (UN-GGIM). The Section also provides geospatial services including map production, geospatial and terrain analysis and other support services to United Nations field missions in coordination with the United Nations Global Service Centre (UNGSC) in Brindisi, Italy. The intern will have a unique opportunity to acquire practical knowledge and understanding in the project and resources planning, as well as the complete lifecycle of implementation and operations within the United Nations global information technology. โ€ข Provides Geospatial information services to the UN Secretariat. โ€ข Provides cartographic and Geospatial information support to the Security Council, United Nations Operations Crisis Centre (UNOCC). โ€ข Provides Geospatial information services to Member States. โ€ข Provides Geospatial information services to the UN Secretariat. โ€ข Assists in clearance of all maps published under the UN Secretariat as per UN Guidelines for the publication of maps (ST/AI/189/Add.25/Rev.1). โ€ข Assists in maintaining the United Nations Map (UN map) geodatabase and Second Administrative Level Boundary (SALB). โ€ข Assists in research, collection, validation and compilation of Geospatial data, including place names for map and Geospatial analysis products. โ€ข Provides the preparation, production and quality control of country profile maps and thematic maps for the UN Secretariat. โ€ข Participates in the activities related to the United Nations Geospatial Network to ensure timely exchange of Geospatial information within the UN Secretariat and UN System community. โ€ข Participates in the activities related to leveraging Geospatial information and technological solutions to the activities of the UN Secretariat. โ€ข Provides cartographic and Geospatial information support to the Security Council, United Nations Operations Crisis Centre, UN Peace Operations and UN Sustainable Development Goals. โ€ข Prepares small-scale briefing maps and presentation materials and conducts cartographic/Geospatial presentation at the Security Council closed consultations. โ€ข Assists in the preparation of Geospatial analysis products for the Security Council's Panel of Experts. โ€ข Provides the production of peacekeeping deployment maps.โ€ข Provides planning and operational maps in support of the peacekeeping operations especially during the mission planning and start-up phases. โ€ข Assists in the development and maintenance of geographic databases including satellite imagery, as well as software applications to support the UN Peace Operations. โ€ข Assists in development of Geospatial products and services to support the UN Sustainable Development Goals. โ€ข Assists in the timely exchange of geographic information between UN headquarters, UN field missions (including UNGSC) and UN Funds, Programmes and Agencies (AFPs). โ€ข Provides Geospatial information services to Member States. โ€ข Assists in support of the Secretariat of UN Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management (UN-GGIM). โ€ข Participates in the activities related to the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names. โ€ข Assists in research on international boundary issues, particularly disputed territories. โ€ข Performs other functions as required. Qualifications/special skillsTo qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduated school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or, (b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelorโ€™s level or equivalent). We are open to a broad range of educational backgrounds. โ€ข Demonstrate an intention to pursue further studies or a career in fields closely aligned with the responsibilities of Information and Communications Technology, Information Management, Project Management, Business Management, and Service Management. โ€ข Strong knowledge of Microsoft cloud technologies, including Office 365, SharePoint Online, and Azure is an advantage. โ€ข Knowledge of IT service Management (ITIL Foundation) and Project Management (Prince 2) frameworks is an advantage. โ€ข Knowledge and proficiency in Office 365 tools or their equivalent consumer tools is an advantage. โ€ข Knowledge of utilizing business intelligence tools for data collection, consolidation, and analysis, including working with databases, Excel (Pivot Tables and queries), and Power BI, is an advantage. โ€ข Interest in developing sustainable ICT solutions with a focus on modern technologies is an advantage. โ€ข Ability to translate business requirements into effective IT solutions is an advantage. โ€ข Keen interest and understanding of customer-centric service delivery, emphasizing innovative enterprise ICT solutions, collaboration, and enhancing customer experiences, is an advantage. โ€ข Understanding of data management principles, encompassing real-time/streaming data, data warehousing, and data cleansing is an advantage.
