Work LocationUNHQ - This internship is designed to be in-person and full-time (35 hours) but can be adjusted based on request by the successful candidate. Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe position is located in the International Tax and Development Cooperation Branch (ITDCB) of the Financing for Sustainable Development Office (FSDO) in the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs. The internship position is for a minimum of two months with an opportunity for extension up to a maximum of six months, pending the needs of the department. The start date is November 2025, though applicants interested in taking up an internship in the first semester of 2026 are also encouraged to apply. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Depending on the individual circumstances of the successful candidates, the internship may offer a Flexible Work Arrangement (FWA) to be conducted fully remote, hybrid (combination of in-person and remote), part-time, and/or temporary remote modalities for the purpose of G-4 visa processing. Interns will work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned. About the Opportunity The UN Committee of Experts on International Cooperation in Tax Matters (UN Tax Committee) develops practical guidance to help developing countries strengthen their tax systems and mobilize domestic resources for sustainable development. These publicationsโhandbooks, model tax provisions, toolkitsโare used by government officials, tax administrations, and practitioners worldwide. The intern will support the production and dissemination of these publications to government officials, tax administrations, and practitioners in developing countries. The intern will work with substantive experts and professional editors and graphic designers to shepherd Committee publications from final text approved by the Committee through professional editing, typesetting, and graphic design to produce print-ready files for wide distribution and capacity building activities. Responsibilities The intern(s) core responsibilities are to support the branch in the production of the UN Tax Committee publications by proofreading texts at multiple stages, checking editorial changes for substantive alterations, verifying citations and cross-references, reviewing formatting and layout of typeset documents, and flagging issues to supervisors to meet quality standards and production timelines. Duties include: - Proofread publications at multiple stages: compare draft texts against Committee-approved versions, check professionally edited manuscripts for accuracy, and review typeset PDFs against source documents; - Check editorial changes to flag any substantive alterations for supervisor review; - Verify citations, references, web links, and cross-references across complex technical documents; - Review formatting and layout of typeset publications to identify errors or inconsistencies; - Support production timelines by completing proofreading tasks promptly and flagging issues to supervisors. Additional duties may include but are not limited to: - Assist with research, fact-checking, and compilation of information on international tax matters (e.g., tax treaties, transfer pricing, digitalized and globalized economy, extractive industries, VAT/GST, environmental taxation, digitalization of tax administration, tax transparency, health taxation) - Draft or review briefing notes, talking points, or summaries of technical content for different audiences - Attend and summarize meetings, workshops, or conferences (in-person or virtual) - Support preparation of presentations, reports, or other materials related to the Committee's work - Carry out ad hoc assignments related to the work of the branch. Qualifications/special skillsTo qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following condition must be met: Applicants to the programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's degree or equivalent). Other requirements: - Field of study related to economics, law, public policy, international relations, development, communications, journalism, or related fields; - Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills in English with meticulous attention to detail; - Computer literacy in standard software applications, including MS Office and Adobe Suite (particularly Adobe Acrobat); - Experience with editorial work such as student newspapers, magazines, journals, blogs, or other publications. Desirable qualifications/special skills: - Interest in or familiarity with international tax, development finance, or economic policy; - Experience working with technical or academic publications; - Familiarity with InDesign or other desktop publishing software; - Familiarity with style guides (e.g., UN Editorial Manual, Chicago Manual of Style, The New York Times Manual of Style and Usage); - Ability to work independently and meet tight deadlines.
