Mission and objectivesMorobe Development Foundation Inc. is a leading Internationally recognised NGO based in Lae Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea. It has the vision to help young people reach their full potential by utilizing their hidden talents in community development initiatives so they can realize their potential and become role model in the community. MDF was established to address a broader and more diverse range of objectives and work through the use of dance, music, and drama, MDF’s primary aim is to ensure that women participate equally in decision-making in any project undertaken, including projects related to Ending Violence against Women and promoting Human Rights to support the Government and the Sustainable Development Goals. MDF, in collaboration with Online Volunteers, engaged through the UNV's Unified Volunteer Platform (UVP), has also undertaken various scientific research studies related to the environment - forest cover loss, land use land cover change, the influence of various parameters on surface waters, and coastal shoreline turtle habitat loss. These projects included the participation of various experts and researchers from diverse fields across various countries across the globe - ranging from marine biology, biodiversity conservation, PNG community management, remote sensing, and land use policy among various others. MDF is managed by a management committee, which is made up of the Chairman, the Deputy Chairman, Secretary, the Treasurer, the Project Coordinator, Community Development Officer, and a male and female member of the foundation, and ensures that women participate equally in decision making. We at MDF assert that we have the required skill sets, knowledge, established international network, and the necessary foundational work to undertake projects successfully.
ContextMDF is a leading community group in Papua New Guinea that for the last 15 years has been involved in carrying out projects addressing the needs of the rural population in Morobe and the rest of the Province in the country. MDF needs the support of three Online Volunteers who can help to develop GIS GEE coding to help assess the depletion of the shoreline at Lababia Village in Huon District of Morobe Province. The shoreline of different years will be assessed and compared to see if there is depletion in the shorelines in Lababia Village which is a vital nesting site for the endangered leatherback turtle which comes up every year to lay eggs. To that end, the Online Volunteers support through this assignment will greatly support MDF in achieving its project objective which is to support community projects in the rural community as well as to address climate change and environmental impact on the ecosystem. This collaboration with Online Volunteers will also support MDF to contribute in addressing SDG challenges in PNG.
Task DescriptionMDF urgently requires the support of three Online Volunteers to conduct remote sensing to assess shoreline depletion in Lababia Village located in Huon Guld District of Morobe Province. Online Volunteer One and Two: - GEE Coding Collaboration: The volunteers will work together to develop the Google Earth Engine (GEE) coding needed for the shoreline depletion assessment. - Research and Data Collection: The volunteers will spend time researching and gathering relevant data for the shoreline depletion assessment. This includes finding satellite images and other geographical data that can be used in the GEE coding. - Coding and Scripting: Write the GEE scripts needed to process and analyze the data. This involves several iterations of coding, testing, and refining the scripts to ensure accuracy and efficiency. - Data Visualization: Creating visualizations such as maps or graphs to represent the shoreline changes. This could also include setting up dashboards or reports that can be easily shared with stakeholders. - Communication: Regular communication with the contact person for MDF to receive guidance and updates. Online Volunteer Three: - Code Review: Thoroughly reviewing the GEE scripts developed by Volunteers One and Two. This includes checking for errors, optimizing performance, and ensuring the code follows best practices. - Testing and Validation: Running multiple tests to validate the accuracy of the results generated by the GEE scripts. This could involve comparing the results with historical data or other sources. - Shoreline Analysis: Conducting detailed analysis using the GEE code to identify and measure shoreline depletion. This might involve running complex algorithms and interpreting the results. - Feedback and Improvement: Providing feedback to Volunteers One and Two, suggesting improvements or adjustments based on the test results. - Assistance and Support: Assisting with any troubleshooting or technical challenges that arise during the coding and analysis process. - Communication: Regular communication with the contact person for MDF to receive guidance and updates. Overall tasks: - Regular Updates: All volunteers will be expected to provide regular updates on their progress. - Reference and Certification: Upon completion of the task, all volunteers will receive a reference from MDF and certification through the Unified Volunteering Platform. - Collaboration: Effective collaboration and clear communication between all volunteers to ensure the success of the project.
