About this position

We are seeking an experienced and knowledgeable economist to play a pivotal role in improving the lives of people in Latin America and the Caribbean. Your main responsibilities will include offering strategic analysis and guidance for regional and country-level discussions, with the aim of enhancing the effectiveness of our knowledge products and bolstering our operations.

What you’ll do:

Provide expert economic analysis and strategic guidance to VPC, focusing on regional and country dialogue, research and programmatic agenda, strategy formulation, and operational program. Lead and contribute to relevant VPC analyses and documents by applying best practices, empirical evidence, and economic theory. Help the IDB gain a strategic view of economic issues to promote growth and development. Build networks with international organizations, academic institutions and government officials to exchange information, promote research initiatives and expand the influence of the IDB. Lead economic policy dialogue and broad discussions on substantive development issues with senior policymakers, supported by advanced knowledge. Generate policy-relevant research with actionable recommendations, readily transformable into briefings for senior government decision makers. Provide intellectual guidance in the identification of critical issues for the dialogue with countries and strengthen discussions on the most pressing issues for the region. Provide articulate, technically sound and compelling contributions to the IDB strategies, supported by relevant data and persuasive arguments. Collaborate with a team of economists in regional departments and across the Bank to enhance macroeconomic analysis in the region, using innovative techniques and maintaining high technical standards in knowledge products. Work closely with the Department of Research and Chief Economist (RES) and the Vice Presidency of Sectors and Knowledge (VPS) to contribute to knowledge generation.

What you'll need

Education: You hold a Ph.D. in Economics degree from a recognized university. Outstanding professional background and strong technical competencies. Experience: At least 15 years of senior-level experience as a leading economist in public/government institutions, international organizations or in the private sector, preferable in organizations concerned with growth and development issues in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) or other emerging regions. Proven experience in addressing high-level national authorities and conveying highly technical issues, with context- specific pertinence and a clear understanding of political economy issues. Proven ability to conduct policy-relevant research and provide advice on macroeconomic management, with particular focus on policy at the national and subnational level. Proven capacity to integrate and situate sectoral issues within a broader development framework. Publications: Impactful publications on economic issues relevant to Latin America and the Caribbean and/or other emerging and developing regions, focusing on applied knowledge. Strong record of leadership in major economic reports or other published work relating to growth, development and poverty issues. Languages:. Proficiency in English and Spanish. Knowledge of Portuguese would be desirable. Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to present complex analyses to non-specialist audiences. Tactful communication skills combined with honest and courage of opinion. Other: Ability to work flexibly on a range of assignments and adjust to a variety of complex evolving tasks to meet deadlines. Willingness to travel, ability to work in a multicultural environment, outstanding interpersonal skills. Supervisory capacity.
