5 Steps to get a job in the United Nations

Mission and objectivesThe United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme contributes to peace and development through volunteerism worldwide. We work with partners to integrate qualified, highly motivated and well supported UN Volunteers into development programming and promote the value and global recognition of volunteerism. UNV is administered by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and reports to the UNDP/UNFPA/UNOPS Executive Board.

ContextIn recent years the Caribbean Region has seen an increase in the number and severity of emergencies, natural disasters and threats to the public health. Devastating hurricanes and earthquakes have impacted many islands in the region in recent years. There has been a sharp increase in the spread of infectious diseases like ZIKA, Chikungunya, and Dengue. The Online Volunteer will play a vital role in enhancing UNV's roster of volunteers that could be called upon by UN agencies such as the World Food Program (WFP), the Pana-American Health Organization (PAHO) or the United Nationas development Program (UNDP), among others in the event of a natural disaster or health issue that requires emergency response in the Caribbean. The volunteer will be required to research and develop a contact list for organizations whose members could be called upon to support the UN in times of need: including medical and nursing schools, paramedic and EMT (emergency management training) institutes and schools, public health programmes, firefighting schools and institutes, organizations involved in disaster relief (ex. all of the Red Cross agencies in the region), relevant civil society organizations, psychologists, counselors, social workers, trauma specialists institutes, public health experts, epidemiologists, environmental health specialists, environmental scientists, disaster recovery experts, GIS and data analysts. By developing this database, the Online Volunteers will help to inform and recruit new volunteers in the UNV platform, creating a roster that could shape emergency preparedness and response in the Caribbean to save lives and make meaningful progress on the Sustainable Development Goals.

Task DescriptionThe Online Volunteer will be assigned to undertake online research to develop database in excel form for organizations whose members could be recruited to support the UN in times of disaster preparedness and response. The final deliverable must be structured in an Excel file, ensuring that each organization is clearly categorized by theme and country. The information should include full names, titles, affiliations, LinkedIn profiles as a priority, and other social media handles if available for the leading management teams of each organization, including their human resources leads. The volunteer will also propose a practical and efficient tagging system within the Excel file to streamline the process of selecting organizations and individuals for specific responses (e.g. social work, paramedic, etc.). The goal is to make the list immediately useful and accessible, allowing for quick reference and engagement with key figures in emergency preparedness and response recruitment. The Online Volunteers will have a weekly meeting with UNV Coordinating Team for the Caribbean region to understand the assignment.
