Duties and ResponsibilitiesThis internship is unpaid and based in the Headquarters Client Support Service (HQCSS), Division of Administration, New York, within the Department of Operational Support (DOS). The intern will report to a Senior Human Resources Officer and work under the supervision of Human Resources Officers in DOS. The Department of Operational Support delivers high-quality operational, advisory, and support services to entities across the United Nations Secretariat, including departments at Headquarters, offices away from Headquarters, field missions, and regional commissions. DOS plays a key role in enabling the effective and efficient functioning of the Organization. The internship is offered for a minimum duration of three (3) months, with the possibility of extension up to six (6) months, subject to operational requirements. Interns are expected to work four to five days per week for a total of 20 to 35 hours. Depending on operational needs, internships may be conducted in person, remotely, or in a hybrid modality. Interns undertaking in-person internships are expected to report to the office at least four days per week, in line with UN Headquarters New York hybrid working arrangements. Interns are fully integrated into the team and contribute meaningfully to ongoing workstreams, while gaining practical exposure to human resources operations within the United Nations. Responsibilities vary based on the internโ€™s background, assigned business unit, and internship period. HQCSS provides administrative and human resources support to a broad range of Secretariat offices, including special political missions, ethics and oversight functions, information and communications technology entities, partnership and human security offices, and several senior-level mandates and liaison offices based in New York. This diverse client portfolio offers interns wide institutional exposure across multiple United Nations mandates. Responsibilities may include: - Collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from multiple sources to support the development of datasets, data models, and surveys. - Applying statistical and/or mathematical programming techniques to interpret and derive insights from complex data. - Providing technical support for existing analytical products, including reports, dashboards, and data tools. - Supporting data cleaning, validation, and integration efforts using primary and secondary data sources, and maintaining databases and data management systems. - Translating analytical findings into clear written reports, data visualizations, and presentations for stakeholders and senior leadership. - Assisting with data mining, optimization initiatives, metrics development, and predictive analytics. - Contributing to the identification and development of innovative methodologies and approaches for new data products and analytical solutions. - Performing other related duties as required to support team objectives. Qualifications/special skillsApplicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelorโ€™s degree or equivalent). No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Typically, our interns are pursuing studies in Computer Science, Economics, Statistics, Operations Research, Engineering, Mathematics, Data Visualization or Analytics.
