Organizational Unit
Severe weather services section in collaboration with Technical coordination Unit. WMO is committed to achieving diversity and a balanced workforce. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Support coordination of stakeholders enhancing weather forecasting in Africa
- Collaborate with stakeholders (e.g., EUMETSAT/NWC SAF, Vlabs, RSMCs, NMHSs, etc.) towards improving nowcasting capabilities in West and Central Africa.
- Coordinate technical meetings with participating NMHSs and contributing WMCs/Global Centres to review progress of Severe Weather Forecasting Programme (SWFP) implementation
Contribute to severe weather capacity building
- Develop and deliver trainings on the elaboration and exploitation of synthetic synoptic charts such as the ANASYG on MISVA platform.
- Define specification process to facilitate the use of innovative synoptic meteorological products on MISVA platform and others, by NMHSs in central Africa, in collaboration with the relevant RSMCs and WMO partners.
- Support regional forecaster in testing and demonstrating the application of the developed Standard Operating Procedure (SOPs) for Severe Weather Forecasting (SWF).
- Contribute to the improvement and verification of regional SWF guidance and use of the available NWP and satellite products.
- Test and demonstrate the use of RSMC regional guidance by NHMSs for their national warnings/forecasts.
- Provide content specification and assist in the design and development of online training platforms on severe weather forecasting. This includes support for revision of training material and provides recommendations for tailored capacity building.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education
Masterโs degree in meteorology, Atmospheric Science or closely related fields.
Experience
- Knowledge of numerical weather prediction models and rich experience in application and use of NWP outputs in weather forecasting.
- Knowledge of WMO support to improve national weather forecasting and early warning services.
- Experience (minimum 15 years) in supporting the development of operational meteorology in developing countries, especially in Africa.
- Knowledge of the roles and functionalities of RSMCs and their country support.
Other requirements
- Sense of responsibility, flexibility, maturity of judgement, initiative, originality of ideas and ability to work independently and in a team.
- Ability to travel to Africa.
- Ability to write and synthesize technical and scientific documents.
- Ability to prepare pedagogical training material and to deliver the training efficiently.
Languages
Excellent knowledge of French and English language, both oral and written (the work has to be carried out in French with national institutions, reports have to be provided to WMO in French with a summary in English).
