About this position
We are looking for a climate finance expert with background in multilateral development bank (MDB) operations to support the IDB’s continued process to align operations with the objectives of the Paris Agreement and estimate climate finance.
This consultant will work in partnership with stakeholders across the IDBG and Latin America and the Caribbean to provide technical leadership in climate finance tracking, implement and advise teams during the project cycle on the application of the joint Multilateral Development Bank (MDB) methodology to analyze the Paris Agreement alignment (PAA) and track the climate finance contribution of each project, and will contribute to the MDB coordination and reporting process.
You will work for the Climate Change Solutions Division (CSD/CCS), which is part of the Climate Change and Sustainability Sector (CSD). This team is responsible for advising IDB management and developing policies, strategies, operational guidelines, and programs on issues relevant to the sector, as well as related areas. In addition, CSD carries out relevant sector research, analytical work, sector practices and case studies on climate change and sustainability. As a division of CSD, CSD/CCS provides support: (i) in the mainstreaming of climate change in the actions and operations of the IDB group and (ii) in the mainstreaming of climate change in the regional countries of the IDB group through support to the ministries of environment, planning, and economy and finance of the region. Both axes share the objective of strengthening climate policy at the subnational, national, and regional levels.
What you’ll do
- Provide support to the Climate Finance Tracking team of the Bank for process of checking climate finance estimations in loans and Technical Cooperations, following the joint MDB methodology Climate Finance Methodology.
- Support CCS climate change specialists and CCS focal points (with operational divisions) to interpret the MDB methodologies, and on technical matters related to Climate Finance Tracking, toward ensuring more nuanced, better-informed analysis, and estimations.
- Assist with the revision of Climate Finance estimations in projects and conduct capacity-building activities under the guidance of the supervisor.
- Support the development and follow-up of strategic plans and partnerships related to climate finance tracking and liaise with other agencies and partners under the supervisor's guidance upon the division chief's guidance.
- Provide technical support to IDB’s teams participating in the MDB Adaptation Working Group and/or the MDB Climate Mitigation Group discussions, as needed, both part of the Climate Finance interaction with MDBs.
- Participate in discussions of MDB sub-groups on specific technical matters related to Climate Finance Tracking and develop content for joint MDB products, including statements and presentations.
- Compile and analyze data from the IDB’s assessment of Climate Finance Tracking of its operations and, based on lessons learned, suggest improvements, and contribute to the process to refine joint MDB methodologies for these processes, in coordination with the PAA and Green Finance Tracking Teams.
- Develop content for IDB Management and Board of Directors regarding specific operations or sectors, as well as for the work jointly done with other MDB (including reporting, joint statements and presentations).
What you'll need
• Education: Master's degree in Economics, International Development, or a discipline related to climate change or the environment., or other fields relevant to the responsibilities of the role.
• Experience: At least 5 years of general professional experience and at least 3 years working with climate finance methodologies and/or taxonomies, or the equivalent combination of education and experience in multilateral development bank, Paris Agreement and climate finance tracking.
• Languages: Proficiency in English and one of the other Bank official languages (Spanish, French or Portuguese) is required.

- International consultant Full-Time, 12 months (up to 36 months).
If international, Headquarters (Washington, D.C), whereas if national 100% remotely from place of residence of selected candidate and services are expected to be provided from a country where the IDB Group has offices.What we offer
