ABOUT THE ROLE
DRIVING SECTORAL METEOROLOGICAL INNOVATION
The Chief will lead the Sectoral Services Section in advancing WMO's mission to deliver tailored meteorological and climate services across critical economic sectors. Under the authority of the Director of Meteorological and Sectoral Services Division, the Chief will provide strategic leadership for developing and expanding sector-specific services that translate atmospheric and climate information into actionable intelligence for agriculture, energy, economic planning, and emerging sectoral applications.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
a) Lead development and delivery of meteorological and climate services for agricultural meteorology, energy sector operations, and climate services for economic sectors.
b) Advance service co-development approaches that engage users in designing relevant products and delivery mechanisms.
c) Implement user needs assessment methodologies to identify service gaps and opportunities across diverse sectoral applications.
d) Champion integration of emerging technologies and data analytics to enhance sectoral service capabilities and delivery platforms.
e) Identify and pursue emerging sectoral service demands and market opportunities in collaboration with WMO Members and partners.
f) Coordinate drought monitoring and food security activities, maintaining connections with agricultural meteorology frameworks.
g) Support meteorological dimensions of the global energy transition through targeted climate and weather services.
h) Develop adaptive service frameworks that respond to evolving sectoral needs and emerging risks.
i) Build and maintain partnerships with private sector entities, industry associations, and sectoral user communities.
j) Translate complex atmospheric and climate information into accessible, actionable products for non-technical sectoral users.
k) Facilitate knowledge exchange and capacity building initiatives that strengthen sectoral application of meteorological services.
l) Ensure sectoral services address diverse regional contexts and support sustainable development priorities.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education
Master's degree or equivalent in atmospheric sciences, agricultural meteorology, environmental sciences, or related field. A first-level university degree with two additional years of relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.
Experience
A minimum of ten (10) years progressively responsible experience with demonstrated expertise in one major sectoral application (agriculture, energy, or economic sectors).
Other requirements
- PRIMARY SECTORAL EXPERTISE:
Deep knowledge of at least one of the following sectors: agricultural meteorology, energy sector services, or climate services, with demonstrated experience in service development and user engagement.
- CROSS-SECTORAL AWARENESS:
Understanding of service requirements across multiple economic sectors and ability to identify emerging sectoral service demands and opportunities.
- SERVICE DEVELOPMENT:
Expertise in user needs assessment, service co-development approaches, impact assessment methodologies, and translating atmospheric/climate information into sector-relevant products.
- STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT:
Knowledge of working with diverse user communities, private sector partnerships, and translating technical information for non-technical sectoral users.
- Demonstrated ability to work across multiple sectors and identify emerging service opportunities. Experience in service development, user engagement, and stakeholder coordination.

Languages
Excellent knowledge of English (both oral and written). Knowledge of other official languages of the Organization would be an advantage.
(Note: The official languages of the Organization are Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish.) The position is funded from the regular budget.
New appointments on fixed-term contract of one year or more shall be subject to an initial one-year probation period. SALARY AND ALLOWANCES
Annual net base salary on initial appointment is: US$ 101540
