Background:

The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) is the training arm of the United Nations, with a mission to develop individual, institutional and organizational capacities of countries and other UN stakeholders through high-quality learning solutions and related knowledge products and services. Guided by the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and other major plans of action, UNITAR pursues this mission through a wide range of thematic programmes organized under the Peace, People, Planet, Prosperity dimensions of the 2030 Agenda.

The Division for Multilateral Diplomacy is composed of the Multilateral Diplomacy Programme Unit and the New York Office. Through a diverse set of activities, including the design and delivery of learning solutions; advice and support to governments, the UN and other partners; and knowledge and experience-sharing, the Division works to strengthen the representation of countries in institutions of global governance. The Division develops knowledge, skills, awareness and attitudes of delegates and other relevant stakeholders on the processes, procedures, issues and decision-making arenas of multilateral institutions, with a focus on the United Nations. Activities target a wide spectrum of beneficiaries, including delegates posted at multilateral venues, senior to mid-level government officers at the country level; representatives of the United Nations and other organizations; civil society and academia and the private sector.

The Chief Private Sector Cooperation, under the supervision of the Manager of the Multilateral Diplomacy Programme Unit, will:

  • Formulate, coordinate and oversee the planning, implementation, monitoring, evaluation and reporting on private sector activities with a view to foster coherence and alignment with the overall strategic framework of UNITAR.
  • Develop and explore partnerships with potential private sector donors, seeking to encourage their commitment and support to UNITAR programmes and initiatives.
  • Lead resource mobilization and negotiation of donor agreements, in close coordination with the MDPU Manager.
  • Establish and maintain new partnerships with private sector donors, by building upon corporate social responsibility potential and engagement of donors with respect to advancing the SDGs.
  • Provide strategic guidance and support to the MDPU Manager in the development of programme specific partnership and resource mobilization strategies, with clear timelines and ensuring feasibility.
  • Identify potential areas for further development at the Programme Unit level and incubate new private sector initiatives and methodologies with the goal to enhance the diversity and effectiveness of MDPUโ€™s portfolio.
  • Establish the implementation of the latest technologies and methodologies across the Programme and ensure that learning materials and reports meet established quality standards.
  • Engage in fundraising for MDPU and support the MDPU Managerโ€™s efforts for funding activities with private sector partners, contributing to the financial sustainability and growth of the Unit.
  • Represent UNITAR as appropriate, by participating in international, regional, and inter-agency meetings, nurturing and fostering partnerships with the private sector with a view to enhance programme development, coordination and partnership development.
  • Support joint projects across the Institutesโ€™ Divisions, support strategic planning and the overall growth and modernization of UNITAR with a view to enhance synergies and efficiency.
  • Manage the development, maintenance and sharing of knowledge and intelligence, including political intelligence, to ensure the MDPU Manager is informed and positioned to effectively generate and harness opportunities to meet its resource mobilization targets.

    As an Authority in the field of Private Sector Collaborations, the incumbent will execute MDPUโ€™s private sector learning and development activities; successful management of private sector partnerships, contributing to the financial sustainability of the Programme Unit and to the organisationโ€™s cross-cutting activities to build corporate standards; representing MDPU in a positive and professional manner, by demonstrating authority in the Private Sector field, to enhance UNITARโ€™s overall reputation; incubation of new and/or innovative programme areas; management and growth of the Unitโ€™s private sector collaborations; efficient and effective fundraising.
