HART is a Christian charity founded and led by Baroness Cox, whose mission is to support people suffering from conflict and persecution, especially those neglected by the international community.

Since 2017 the focus of major aid agencies has moved away from eastern Myanmar towards the centre of the country and towards Bangladesh, where the Rohingya refugee crisis has captured international media attention. Loi Tai Leng School and 5 other schools for displaced children along the border have been left in desperate need of food aid and educational support.

Loi Tai Leng School is situated in Shan State, eastern Myanmar. It currently has 700 students, of whom 400 are boarders. Due to chronic conflict in Shan State, many of the students are orphans.

In January 2019 HART provided funding for a dam to be built in the valley below Loi Tai Leng School, which has since facilitated a fish farm, irrigation and an agricultural education programme for students. The School’s Headmaster, Su Meh Na, now identifies an English teacher as the school’s greatest need.

Loi Tai Leng School is looking for a Volunteer English Teacher to teach displaced children along the Myanmar / Thai border for 3-6 months.

The volunteer will be required to cover the cost of international travel. Loi Tai Leng School will provide food, accommodation and any internal transportation.

“The whole world uses English, and I want to be able to communicate with other people,” said Lurn Kham, a student at the school. Another student, 18-year-old Nang Ying explained that “To study at University, we need to know how to speak English”.

HART will provide orientation in London before the placement, support by email or skype during your time at the School and a follow-up session upon your return to the UK.

A Qualified Teacher Status or ESOL qualification would be an advantage, but HART is happy to consider any enthusiastic and resilient applicant with a good level of education, a strong command of English, and some teaching experience.
