ABOUT UNODC IN MEXICO

In 1996, the government of Mexico and the Central American governments, through their accredited embassies in Mexico, celebrated a Memorandum of Understanding with UNODC to face the issues of drugs and crime in the region. This memorandum served as precedent for UNODC and the Mexican government to sign a cooperation agreement and establish a regional office for Mexico and Central America in 2003, which would coordinate and supervise the activities of UNODC throughout the region. In this document, the government of Mexico acknowledges legal personality to the Office in Mexico, as well as its international privileges and immunities. In 2008, through a new cooperation agreement, the relationship and collaboration between UNODC and the government of Mexico were further strengthened.

On October 15, 2012 yet another cooperation agreement was signed between the Government of Mexico and the United Nations to generate a new form of engagement and grant the Office the status of a Liaison and Partnership Office (LPO). The renewed office, jointly with the Mexican State, develops strategic planning, promotes alliances and South-South cooperation, exchanges information and knowledge, and develops trends analysis. This kind of strengthened partnership between Mexico and UNODC recognizes the principles of the 2003 agreement, which is still in force.
