Org. Setting and Reporting

UNICRI is a United Nations entity established in 1965 to support countries worldwide in preventing crime and facilitating criminal justice. UNICRI is mandated to assist intergovernmental, governmental and non-governmental organizations in formulating and implementing improved policies in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice. UNICRI' s goals are:

-to advance understanding of crime-related problems;
-to foster just and efficient criminal justice systems;
-to support the respect of international instruments and other standards;
-to facilitate international law enforcement cooperation and judicial assistance.

This position is located in UNICRI Headquarters in Turin, Italy and shall be engaged in UNICRI’s project “What are the needs of families in preventing drug use among children and adolescents?” and possibly in other projects focused on crime prevention and criminal justice issues. The internship is for an initial period of 2 (two) months, with an opportunity of extension up to a total period of 6 (six) months. The Internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the programme, project or unit to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities

Duties may include, but are not limited to:
-Conduct research and provide analysis on relevant issues within the crime prevention and criminal justice filed including drug prevention and other related topics.
-Assist in drafting and preparing official documents.
-Attend and summarize conferences and meetings.
-Support organization of meetings and conferences.
-Assist in data collection.
-Assist in drafting and preparing background documents, reports, issue briefs, talking points, articles, presentations etc.
-Monitor regional and global news sources for articles and stories relevant to the project, programme or unit activities.
-Support implementation of projects.
-Assist in maintaining databases.
-Perform other related duties as assigned.

Education

-Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
a.Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
b.Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
c.Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.
-Be computer literate in standard software applications.
-Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;
-Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.
Previous experiences in performing analytical research in the field of drug prevention is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English and French is required for this internship. Knowledge of Italian is an asset. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an asset. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.

Interns must keep confidential any and all unpublished information obtained during the course of the internship and not publish any reports or papers based on such information except with the explicit written authorization of the Chief of CMU. Interns are bound by the same duties and obligations as staff members, and the information to which an intern has access in the course of the internship must not be divulged to external parties.

On completion of their internship, interns are required to complete a substantive report on their assignments. This will be included in their file and will be forwarded, upon request, to the sponsoring institution, government body or private organization.


UNICRI interns are responsible for all internship-related expenses that they incur. The United Nations accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during an internship. Therefore, upon award of an internship, interns are responsible for securing adequate insurance coverage and are required to sign and return a statement confirming their understanding and acceptance of these conditions of service.

Candidates of certain nationalities must obtain a visa authorizing their stay in UNICRI duty stations before they depart to begin their internship. While this is the overall responsibility of the selected candidate, UNICRI will provide supporting documents in this regard.
