COOPI is an international non-governmental, private, apolitical, non-religious and non-profit organization created in 1965. Founded in Milan by Vincenzo Barbieri, its goal is to assist populations hit by emergency in favouring their civil, economic and social development.
COOPI in Syria
After 7 years of conflict, the security and humanitarian situation in Syria has become worse and worse. The conflict has caused significant internal displacement and a massive damage to homes, schools, hospitals and many other infrastructures, leaving millions of people in need of assistance. Among the most relevant figures to represent the concerns, the following ones are encountered: 13.1mln of persons in need; 5,6mln in acute need; 8.2mln of persons at risk of incurring in explosive hazards; 6,5mln of persons are food insecure, 30% of children out of school; 5,6mln refugees; 6,1mln Internally Displaced Persons.
COOPI is active with its humanitarian action in Syria (Damascus) since January 2017 with a Food Security/Livelihood project in Rural Damascus (Qtana) and it’s currently implementing these projects:
Food Security/WASH/PSS integrated approach programme in Eastern Ghouta (ECHO-funded);
PSS activities and Protection services in Eastern Aleppo (UNHCR-funded).
COOPI is aiming at enlarging its programme with particular focus to its commitment in the Food Security/ Livelihood sector.
The Head of Programme (or Programme Coordinator (PC)) is the focal point of COOPI’s program in Syria. In consultation with the Head of Mission, he/she formulates the strategy for the mission and ensures it implementation in accordance with COOPI policies, donor expectation, local and international legislation. He/she coordinates and evaluates all aspects of the COOPI projects, and facilitates the flow of information from the field to the capital. The Programme Coordinator also plays a strategic role for COOPI’s external relationships, liaising with donors and stakeholders in collaboration with the HoM. Moreover, the Head of Programme, which will be based full-time in Damascus (with possible field visits) will act as a Vice-Head of Mission with reference to the representativeness and with responsibility of ensuring the Security plan. Specifically, he/she:
Coordinates and supervises the program country strategy implementation and Security
Coordinates the overall implementation of the projects
Represents and liaises for operational strategy and program to donors, authorities, UN, NGOs in link with the head of Mission
Analyzes Humanitarian needs and response
