The Office of the High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) was established in 1950 by the United Nations General Assembly. The agency is mandated to provide protection, assistance and seek durable solutions for refugees and stateless persons. UNHCR has also been involved under certain circum-stances in enhancing protection and providing humanitarian assistance to internally displaced persons.

Egypt is a signatory State to the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees and its 1967 Pro-tocol, as well as the 1969 OAU Convention Governing Specific Aspects of Refugee Problems in Africa.

In accordance with the Memorandum of Understanding of 1954 concluded between UNHCR and the Government of Egypt, all activities pertaining to registration, documentation and refugee status deter-mination are carried out by UNHCR. UNHCR in Egypt has Offices in Greater Cairo (6th October City and Zamalek district) as well as a Field Office in Alexandria.

Under the direct supervision of Assistant Registration Officer and the overall supervision of the Regis-tration Officer, the Registration Assistant will undertake the following tasks:

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are required to:

  • Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading rele-vant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day).
  • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country.
  • Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including participa-tion in ongoing reflection activities.
  • Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/web-sites, newsletters, press releases, etc.
  • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers;
  • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

11. Results/Expected Output:

  • Between 15-17 registration interviews conducted daily and issue UNHCR documentation in ac-cordance with the registration standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • The quality and the integrity of the information captured at registration maintained, and regis-tration data regularly updated and validated ,including recording specific needs properly in the database.
  • Counseling of POCs effectively provided on protection issues and provision of assistance and durable solutions as well as timely referral of individuals with specific needs to concerned units.
  • Support for other registration activities provided, including conducting home visits, filing, sched-uling appointments and managing the reception.
  • A final statement of achievements towards volunteerism for development during the assign-ment, such as reporting on the number of volunteers mobilized, activities participated in and capacities developed.
  •  Sound interpersonal and communication skills, especially with people from different cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to work individually and as part of a team.
  • Initiative, sound judgment and dedication to the United Nations principles.
  • At least 2 years of relevant professional experience.
  • Good command of Arabic and English (written, read, and spoken).
  • Sound drafting skills, especially in English.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Sound interpersonal and communication skills, especially with people from different cultural backgrounds.
  • At least 22 years of age.
  • Nationality: Egyptian
