Purpose of the post
To support development of Wilton Park’s policy programme as an agile resource working with the whole of the policy team, with opportunities to gain experience on some of Wilton Park’s most high-profile priorities. The Programme Associate (PA) will provide intellectual and policy input as well as logistical support in helping to coordinate event preparation, and in some cases, continuing to work on event delivery.

Key functions and responsibilities

  • Working with the policy team, contribute to and undertake activities in support of Wilton Park’s strategic plan and Programme Directors’ (PDs) specific portfolios. The PA will demonstrate strong project management skills, including preparation of budgets. The PA will also prepare concept notes for sharing with partners and sponsors, providing intellectual and policy support for programme development and researching potential topics, partners and participants
  • Working with the Chief Executive, Programme Directors, the Chief of Staff and the Business Development Manager, help assess the policy and financial market for event ideas; help identify new funding opportunities, prepare funding and grant applications and post-event reporting to partners on financial and other targets
  • Working with the Communications Team and the Impact and Evidence Manager, support strategic communication, monitoring and evaluation and impact goals
  • Working with PDs to identify and develop new partnership opportunities and liaise with existing partners.
  • Working with the Chief Executive’s private office, help provide timely, high quality policy support to the Chief Executive, including on drafting meeting briefs, speaking notes and event related briefs
  • Using Wilton Park’s Knowledge Information Management system (KIM), identify potential speakers and participants, adding to KIM as required and liaising directly with speakers or participants to secure their participation or to identify alternatives
  • Note taking, rapporteur work and representational duties as required

Essential

  • 2.1 from a recognised university
  • 12-18 months relevant work experience, with a demonstrable interest in global affairs, and a policy area of our work
  • Ability to problem solve, research topics and information gather to successfully inform own work
  • Ability to work both in a team and independently
  • Demonstrate strong people and organisational skills; and the willingness and ability to cope in a dynamic and challenging environment
  • Ability to demonstrate a collaborative work style and willingness to take on different roles
  • Ability to work at pace and effectively time-manage, and maintain accuracy and attention to detail
  • Demonstrate ability to understand requirement for confidentiality
  • Demonstrate strong oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrate strong IT and numerical skills

Desirable

  • Understanding, experience or demonstrable interest in a policy area of our work
  • Previous experience of working in a similar environment
  • Be positive, creative, flexible and driven, with a passion for learning – showing commitment to, and interest in self-development
  • Demonstrate an ability to show sensitivity and to see issues from other people’s perspectives
  • Demonstrate advanced understanding of Excel
