INTRODUCTION: The Office of the United Nations (UN) High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is the Secretariat department responsible for strengthening international human rights mechanisms; enhancing equality and countering discrimination; combating impunity and strengthening accountability and the rule of law; integrating human rights in development and in the economic sphere; widening the democratic space; and early warning and protection of human rights in situations of conflict, violence and insecurity.
Since OHCHR moved from the Palais de Nations to the Palais Wilson in 1998, the absence of a specialized documentation centre has been acutely felt as the Library in the Palais des Nations was not as easily accessible to the staff. A documentation centre was needed "to support the research and information needs of the High Commissioner, the experts, special rapporteurs and treaty body members who rely on the Office for substantive assistance, or even its own staff." The proposed Documentation Centre was intended to complement rather than duplicate UNOG Library holdings. By June 2003, the Library had become fully operational and was officially opened to the public on 10 December 2003. In 2018, to reflect the multitude and diversity of resources and services provided by the Library, it has been renamed into Library and Human Rights Gateway.
The Library and Human Rights Gateway is the main access point to information and research on human rights and relevant work of the United Nations. The resources include: Books and multimedia items; Human rights resolutions voting database; Online databases and journals; Online research guides, such as Human Rights Timeline, UDHR for Children and International Commissions of Inquiry (CoIs) and Fact-Finding Missions; Human Rights Education and Training Resource Collection and Database; Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) Resource Collection and UDHR translations.
ORGANIZATIONAL SETTING & REPORTING: This announcement broadcasts international internship assignments with the OHCHR Library. Situated within the Development and Economic, Social Issues Branch (DESIB), the Library provides a quality information service and is an effective gateway to information in the area of human rights and the work of the United Nations in the area of human rights in support of the work of the OHCHR, the UN human rights mechanisms and special procedures, civil society, journalists, researchers and the public in general.

Based in Geneva, Switzerland, under the general guidance and direction of the OHCHR Librarian, the intern reports to the Library Assistant in the area of assignment.
This internship is being offered for an initial period of three (3) months, with possibility of extension up to a total period of six (6) months, with a commencement date ranging/ starting from 1 March 2019 to June 2019.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The intern shall support the OHCHR Library in fulfilling its mission: to provide a quality information service and to be an effective gateway to information in the area of human rights and the work of the United Nations in the area of human rights.
Daily responsibilities of interns supporting the OHCHR Library will depend on the individual's background and specific duties may include but are not limited to: Assisting in digitization of the human rights education and training materials, which includes scanning, editing and Optical Character Recognition (OCR) processing of the materials; Assisting with the finalization of the part two of the final report of the World Conference on Human Rights, which includes conducting research, compiling speeches, checking paper statements against actual delivery, digitizing, editing, OCR processing and final formatting of the publication; and Performing other relates tasks requested by the supervisor as appropriate (i.e. cataloguing, reference, collection development, outreach activities, et cetera).
COMMUNICATION: Speaks and writes clearly and effectively; listens to others, correctly interprets messages from others and responds appropriately; asks questions to clarify, and exhibits interest in having two-way communication; tailors language, tone, style and format to match the audience; demonstrates openness in sharing information and keeping people informed.

Education: To qualify for the United Nations Secretariat internship programme, applicants must, at the time of application, be enrolled in a graduate school programme (i.e. Master's degree or equivalent degree, or higher) or in the final academic year of a first-level university degree programme (i.e. Bachelor's degree or equivalent degree) in the area of library science, information science or a related field, OR have graduated with a university as defined above AND, if selected, must commence the internship within one year period from the date of graduation.
Work Experience: Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the internship programme though any relevant academic and/or practical experience would be an advantage. In particular, academic experience in digitization trends and technologies, with an understanding of theories, concepts and approaches relevant to libraries, information management and/or practical experience conducting research and analysis, using research sources or library work.
Applicants should be computer literate in standard software applications; have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations with a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter, and have the demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs - which includes willingness to understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Languages: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another United Nations official language - Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish - would be an advantage.
