UNICEF plays a critical role in monitoring the situation of children and women in the world and for reporting on progress toward internationally set goals such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the World Fit for Children (WFFC) goals and UNICEF’s Strategic Plan (SP) targets. To support the global monitoring, UNICEF maintains a series of global databases on key indicators, assists countries in collecting necessary data through the UNICEF-supported Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys (MICS), and conducts statistical analyses of the data for global reporting purposes.
The global education databases are used for reporting on progress toward SDGs as well as regular reporting in the statistical tables of The State of the World’s Children report, UNICEF web-related pages, sector-specific and special reports, peer review journal articles and responding to internal and external data requests. UNICEF maintains high standards regarding the quality of data included in the global statistical databases. The data undergo a rigorous review process and must meet a series of objective criteria. Comprehensive documentation of the estimates is maintained in order for the organization to be able to respond to any queries raised about the source of the estimates it publishes. The process of assessing data for inclusion in global databases may involve correspondence with UNICEF field offices and other UN agencies and key partners, and involves close coordination within UNICEF.
Over the past decade, UNICEF has intensified efforts on evidence-based policy advocacy and programming based on the collection and analysis of quality data from diverse sources. In the context of the new SDG education targets that call for a greater focus on the quality and equity of education, there is a growing demand to improve the relevance, quality, availability and analysis of data on education indicators.

The purpose of the Internship is to support data and statistics work on Child Poverty on Violence against Children including updating the global databases, conducting data analyses, and disseminating data related to key indicators.
How can you make a difference?
The Interns will perform the following tasks:Literature review, gathering data from various documents, create databases, carry out estimations of correlation between Child Poverty and obesity and between Child Poverty and different types of VAC. Literature review, gathering data from various documents, create database on health insurance coverage. Stocktaking of available Multidimensional Child Poverty estimates. Estimation of Child Poverty for several countries. Literature review, gathering data from various documents, create database on child/family cash transfers coverage. Technical inputs and data analysis contribution to report/paper. Contribute to the design outline of interactions, content, structure, and pace of delivery of e-course. Assist in the preparation of the global database of estimates of Multidimensional Child Poverty (2000-2017).
To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…Currently enrolled in, or have completed within the last two years, a graduate (Master’s) or undergraduate (Bachelor’s) degree in the areas of statistics, development studies, sociology, economics, public policy, political science, social demography or similar. Demonstrated quantitative analysis skills. Knowledge of statistical software an asset. Excellent academic performance, as demonstrated by academic records. Previous work experience is an asset Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (French, Spanish, Russian, Arabic or Chinese), or a local language, is an asset.
Location: The internship will be home based in the NY with the possibility and periodic on-site work at UNICEF New York HQ.
Duration: This will be a part time / full time internship, the duration will be (July 2nd 2018 to December 31st 2018).
There is no expectancy of employment at the end of the internship. UNICEF is not responsible for obtaining any necessary visas.
Insurance: UNICEF will not be responsible for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during the intern’s service, whether on or off UNICEF premises. Therefore, the selected candidate must provide proof of enrollment in a health/accident plan prior to start his/her work. If accepted, the intern will be required to provide a copy of health insurance coverage and to fill out the relevant UNICEF forms on conditions regarding service as an intern.
Living Conditions and Working Environment:The intern will work at UNICEF House, New York. S/he will work with the D & A Section and report to the supervisor of this internship. S/he is not expected to travel out of this duty station during the assignment. A flexible workspace will be provided. The intern will be expected to participate in Section's meetings, as well as other UNICEF meetings of interest to the student, including the seminar series for UNICEF interns. Guidance will be provided on a regular basis.
