Org. Setting and Reporting

The internship is located at the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) in Vienna, Austria. The intern will work under the direct supervision of Chief of the Committee, Policy and Legal Affairs Section (CPLA).

Internship position is for a period of minimum three months, with the option to extend to a total period of six months, based on the needs of the office and the availability of the intern. The internship period is expected to begin in January 2020.

This internship is unpaid. The intern will work five days per week (40 hours).

The internship will include tasks under the overall plan of work of UNOOSA, which is responsible for promoting international cooperation in the peaceful uses of outer space.

UNOOSA, through CPLA, provides substantive secretariat services to the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, its Scientific and Technical Subcommittee and Legal Subcommittee and related working groups, as well as to the Working Group of the Whole of the Special Political and Decolonization Committee (Fourth Committee) of the General Assembly when it considers the item on international cooperation in the peaceful uses of outer space. The Office leads the Inter-Agency Meeting on Outer Space Activities (UN-space), which is a central coordination mechanisms within the UN system on the use of space science and technology.

Responsibilities

The intern shall undertake the following duties which may include, but are not limited to:
•Assist in the Secretariat services to the 2020 cycle of sessions of the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) and its Subcommittees, including pre-, in-, and post-session assignments;
•Assist in legal and/or policy related research and analysis;
•Deliver a final presentation on the internship outcomes; and
•Perform other tasks as necessary.

Education

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:
•Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation;
•Degree programmes should be in a field of international affairs, policy and law, or other degree relevant to the activities of CPLA;
•Be computer literate in standard software applications;
•Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
•Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations. Fluency in English, i.e. oral and written proficiency is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
