The United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.
The overall objective of UN Environment's Economy Division is to encourage decision-makers in government, local authorities and industry to develop and adopt policies, strategies and practices and technologies that promote sustainable patterns of consumption and production, make efficient use of natural resources, ensure safe management of chemicals and contribute to making trade and environment policies mutually supportive. It promotes the development, use and transfer of policies, technologies, economic instruments, managerial practices and other tools that assist in environmentally sound decision making and the building of corresponding activities.
The Special Programme aims to support institutional strengthening at the national level for implementation of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions, the Minamata Convention and the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM). Through the Special Programme, support can be provided to developing countries and countries with economies in transition to enhance their sustainable institutional capacity to develop, adopt, monitor and enforce policy, legislation and regulation and to gain access to financial and other resources for effective frameworks for the implementation of the legally binding chemicals and waste conventions and SAICM. This internship position is located in the UN Environment/Economy Division/Chemicals and Health Branch in Geneva, Switzerland.
The Special Programme internship is for six months.
The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work five days per week (35-40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
Under the direct supervision of the Programme Officer of the Secretariat of the Special Programme on Institutional Strengthening the intern will:
--Assist the Secretariat of the Special Programme with the following tasks:
--Provide support for the monitoring of the approved projects of the first and second rounds of applications and the management of the third round of applications;
--Participate in team meetings and provide support in preparation for the fourth meeting of the Special Programme Executive Board, which is scheduled to take place in December 2018;
--Provide support for the implementation of the midterm evaluation of the Special Programme;
--Assist with organizing conference calls and team meetings as well as with preparation of various written outputs, e.g. briefing notes, background papers, presentations, etc.;
--Assist the team in increasing communication and information flow within the Branch: draft responses to routine correspondence and other relevant communication, proofread correspondences in English and revise grammar, punctuation and style, maintain files (both paper and electronic) to enhance tracking. Daily responsibilities may vary depending on the individual's background as well as the internship period.
--Assist with other tasks, as required, especially with corporative issues associated with the Secretariat of the Minamata Convention on Mercury and the Secretariat of the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management.

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.
Be computer literate in standard software applications.
Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;
Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Preferred area of study: International Relations or Environmental Science. Fully proficient computer skills and use of web based platforms and relevant software e.g. word processing, PowerPoint, excel, internal databases, Internet etc. Preference may be given to Masters candidates.
