Background:

This position will be working directly with our senior developer to re-platform and update the micromentor.org web application. We embrace a lean mindset that involves a lot of buying rather than building. We will integrate multiple 3rd party services into a modular system easy to extend in the future.

Purpose / Project Description:

MicroMentor is an initiative of the Mercy Corps Innovations Team. At MicroMentor, our mission is to leverage the power of mentoring to help small businesses thrive. We do so by offering entrepreneurs direct access to a pool of committed professional volunteer mentors via an easy-to-use online community. MicroMentor has an expanding community making 10,000 mentoring connections every year. Entrepreneurs matched with a mentor have shown significant results in terms of improved job creation, business survival, and revenue growth.

MicroMentor is currently rebuilding its website and has a small in-house development team who is looking for an intern who is eager to learn and can support the team in its efforts to launch a Beta version of the site by July 2019. This is an exciting opportunity to get firsthand experience in the QA process as well as learn industry specific best practices and tools, while contributing to a product that contributes globally to social impact.

Consultant Objectives:

Help make the rebuilt site beautiful, responsive, and easy to use.

Consultant Activities:

If you take this role, you will be expected to accomplish the following tasks:

• Create and style snappy, beautiful, interactive web pages

• Follow frontend web development and design best practices

• Work with backend developers to deliver data to the frontend client either via injection into templates or using Javascript to interact with JSON HTTP APIs

• Help develop a testing plan for the user interface

• Actively participate in developing requirements, perfecting an internationalized user experience, and implementing visual designs.

Consultant Deliverables:

The Consultant will:

• Style and write markup for a fully internationalized site.

• Product maintainable CSS, HTML and JavaScript

• Assist in backend architecture by clearly representing the needs of the front end.

• Assist in design process of front end components.

Timeframe / Schedule:

160 hours, starting as near to May 1, 2019 as possible.

The Consultant will work closely with:

Required Experience & Skills:

A qualified candidate would have the following experience:

• 5-10 years of experience with web development

• Expertise in modern HTML and CSS

• Comfort with JavaScript and native browser APIs

• Familiarity with mainstream security models for the web.

• Expertise in development of user interface for web based applications

• Experience working with various lightweight and/or headless CMS products

• Exposure to Flask, Python, and SQLAlchemy is a plus
