Background

The WaterLex vision is a world where there is sustainable use and access to safe water and sanitation for all. It is an international public interest development organization based in Geneva, Switzerland, and a UN-Water Partner with UN ECOSOC special consultative status.

The WaterLex mission is to secure the human rights to water and sanitation through law and policy reform. It works with an alliance of interested parties to improve water-governance frameworks, bringing them in line with country obligations under international human rights law. The organisation has a secretariat in Geneva with 15 staff members, a supervisory board of directors, and a large pool of members and expert advisors.

The International Secretariat is responsible for the implementation of WaterLex projects and the involvement of members and volunteers in the Organization. It also acts as the organization’s focal point for external stakeholders.

WaterLex is always interested in the additional human resource capacity, commitment and dedication offered by students or graduates to collaborate in it’s work.

Participation In such a programme offers interns the opportunity to gain:

· Practical experience of human rights legal and advocacy work at the international level

· A better understanding of how a Human Rights NGO is organised

· Exposure to the practical functioning of the United Nations human rights bodies and mechanisms based in Geneva

· Experience of working in a professional office environment

· Experience of working in a multicultural, multilingual and multi-ethnic environment

· Professional interaction with supervisors who will be able to provide long-term professional advice, encouragement and support; and

· Help in career development.

Position Description – Communication Intern

Reports directly to the Director General

Functions/Key Results Expected

The Communication Intern role is to support marketing and communication activities for WaterLex programmes supporting the Human Rights to Water and Sanitation. The scope of the Internship is the following:

Specific Responsibilities

· Supporting WaterLex workshops and events through project management, marketing materials, media presence, including events such as the World Summit on Leaving No One Behind and participation in Stockholm World Water Week and other side events;

· Supporting WaterLex visibility and online presence through updates of the website, social media and news updates as required. Tracking online activities.

· Assists in editing and publishing training manuals, presentations and other materials to support WaterLex’s legal programme development, and quarterly newsletter;

· Interns are also expected to undertake some administrative duties in addition to their substantive tasks.

Skills and Qualifications Required

· Bachelor’s degree in Communication. Knowledge in human rights law, water, environmental, or international law is helpful;

· Well-organised with excellent research, analytical and copywriting skills and able to work independently;

· Computer literate, and competent social media skills;

· Highly motivated, able to work under pressure;

· Fluency in both written and spoken English, with a second language in French and/or Spanish;

· Holds a valid Swiss working permit or EU passport.

Post and Duration

WaterLex offers continuous openings for internships. Interns are hired for a minimum of 4 months and a maximum period of one year.
