1. Organizational Context
The post is located in the Translation Technology Unit, Support Section, PCT Translation Division, PCT Services Department, Patents and Technology Sector.
The PCT Translation Division is responsible for delivering high-quality publication-ready translation in relation to patent applications filed under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT). In particular, the PCT Translation Division is responsible for the translation of scientific, technical and legal documents, mainly the abstracts of international patent applications and scientific, technical and legal reports relating to the patentability of inventions.
The Support Section is responsible for providing logistical, technical, and terminology support to the activities of the Service, in particular with regard to the distribution and tracking of translation and quality control work, the deployment of computer-assisted translation tools and machine translation systems, and the building and publishing of the PCT multilingual terminology database of scientific and technical terminology.
The incumbent will assist in the deployment of translation-related technology within the Division, in particular, technology relating to machine translation and automatic machine translation quality estimation.
The Assistant Translation Technologist works under the supervision of the Head of the Translation Technology Unit.
2. Duties and Responsibilities
The incumbent will perform the following principal duties:
a. Assist in developing an automatic machine translation quality estimation framework for use within the Division.
b. Participate in the testing, installing, updating and maintaining of the automatic machine translation quality estimation framework.
c. Ensure that the automatic machine translation quality estimation system is fully integrated with the WorldServer system.
d. Ensure that all processes and developments are fully documented for later use.
e. Participate in developing neural machine translation (NMT) engines and evaluate their usefulness for the Division.
f. Update and maintain the Division’s machine translation engines.
g. Perform other related duties as required.
A first-level university degree in translation, computational linguistics, translation technology or in an equivalent technical field, or advanced university degree in translation with a machine translation component, with demonstrated experience and knowledge of the application of machine translation technology.
At least three years of professional work experience in machine translation technology.
Excellent knowledge of English.
A working knowledge of at least one of the following languages would be advantageous: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian or Spanish.

Total annual salary consists of a net annual salary (net of taxes and before medical insurance and pension fund deductions) in US dollars and a post adjustment. The post adjustment (cost of living allowance) is variable and subject to change without notice in accordance with the rates as set within the UN Common System for salaries and allowances. The figures quoted below are based on the March 2017 rate of 79.5%.
Salaries and allowances are paid in Swiss francs at the official rate of exchange of the United Nations (not applicable for the External Offices).

Temporary appointments are renewable, subject to continuing needs, availability of budget and satisfactory performance with a maximum cumulative length of two years.
