JOB PURPOSE
Under the umbrella of the Research Assessments and Mapping (RAM) unit at the WFP country office in Maputo, the position supports INGD, INAM and other governmental agencies to strengthen national capacity for the use of innovative technology for effective Early Warning and Emergency Preparedness and Response.
Additionally the unit is responsible to produce maps, geospatial analysis and other GIS products to other teams at the Country Office and in Field Offices.
Under the direct supervision of the VAM Team Leader, the GIS Officer will be responsible for the following tasks:
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive)
Lead activities conducted by the RAM team to increase national capacity in flood monitoring and modelling; Liaise with GIS experts at the HQ to find common technical solutions and processes for effective flood and climate monitoring and provide GIS analysis and mapping support during the cyclone season; Liaise with external partners to procure climate and satellite related data required for flood monitoring; In preparation for the 2024/2025 rainy season, liaise with colleagues in the RAM unit and in other units at the CO to improve the GeoDashboard used to monitor cyclones and floods by adding other relevant layers and identify workflows to keep the information up to date; Deliver information sessions on weather alerts during the 2024/2025 rainy season; Set up monitoring of WFP activities through the GeoEnabler dashboard; Increase the use of climate products in the RAM unit and improve its capacity on delivering climate analysis; Support the Disaster Risk Financing and the Climate Change and Food Systems teams on the interaction with INAM and DNGRH for the delivery of climate products;9. Facilitate the transition of ownership of Seasonal Monitoring and Anticipatory Action products developed by HQ to the CO and government entities (INAM and DNGRH);
10. Liaise with other UN and non-UN entities needing climate products and services;
11. Manage the technical outputs under the SOFF project;
12. Any other duties as requested.
